Spanish police have arrested a 16-year-old Romanian minor who is suspected of being the administrator and main operator of the ransomware gang KillSec, Decrypt reported. Multinational law enforcement agencies launched Operation KillSwitch on September 30, resulting in the arrest of three suspects and searches of eight locations in Spain, Greece, Romania and the United Kingdom. The investigation involved approximately 1,000 suspected cyberattacks worldwide, with approximately 500 confirmed successful. Law enforcement has taken over the KillSec leak site and five core servers, securing at least 110 terabytes of stolen data and tracking proceeds of crime, including cryptocurrency. Another suspect, Fouad Eltibrizi, a Dutch national living in the United Kingdom, has been arrested and is awaiting extradition to Puerto Rico. He has previously been charged with unauthorized access to computers, damaging protected computers and sending extortion threats. He has not yet been convicted.
